Radiation game plan

(posted Jul 16th) We went to Boston today to meet with Dr. Marcus, Mya's radiation doctor. She reviewed the MRI scans and told us that she feels that doing Mya's whole spine with the sessions will yield the best results. If they did only the spots with the tumors, we would almost certainly see more tumors appear elsewhere in her spine. We agreed that doing the whole thing would be best. Can't imagine doing another round of radiation just because we didn't do the right choice. Dr. Marcus said that 15 sessions should be sufficient. Whew! Thank goodness it isn't 31. The 15 will be hard enough. We are only going to do her spine, not her head. We are looking to maintain a certain level of quality of life. We want Mya to keep her mobility. Dr. Marcus felt that we should focus on the spine and we agree with her.

So Mya's sessions will start this Thursday. Yup, that soon. I was thinking they would start them on a Monday, but they wanted to start the sessions as soon as possible. The tumors are extremely close to her spinal cord and Dr. Marcus is concerned about that. So, we won't get as much time as we were hoping for. But, it means that her sessions will be over the first full week of August, so maybe Mya will recover enough to start school in September. Our appointments are at 8am, so we are hopeful that we will be home by early afternoon each day.

We've been told that the effects of the sessions shouldn't be as severe as before. Mya might experience a sore throat, nausea. We will see. We've stopped all her medications, except for the Oxycodone. The doctors felt they weren't really helping. We are hoping that the sessions will give Mya relief in her walking. The last month, she has been struggling more and more.

I'm nervous about another round of radiation. The effects on Mya were so severe, not looking forward to going through that again. Although, I'm sure it's a lot tougher for Mya. Hard to believe a 5 year can shoulder such a big burden, but she does. Love her so much for that.

We will let everyone know how the first few sessions go.
